"The study about microprofiling of Beta Thalassemia mutations in Telangana population found that four districts in Telangana are specifically at high-risk of the life altering genetic disease Beta Thalassaemia. The disease is found in high prevalence in Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Mahbubnagar and Khammam districts. The study also found that members of five community groups – Sunni, Lambada, Madiga, Mala and Mudiraj were getting this genetic disorder more often than others.
Beta Thalassemia district model has helped to assess whether thalassemia carrier frequencies or births are increasing or decreasing in the population through screening programmes, encouraging registrations at birth and a mechanism to modulate knowledge as well as awareness programmes for identification and prevention of thalassemia.
